Horticulture is the industry and science of plant cultivation including the process of preparing soil for the planting of seeds, tubers, or cuttings.[1] Horticulturists work and conduct research in the disciplines of plant propagation and cultivation, crop production, plant breeding and genetic engineering, plant biochemistry, and plant physiology. The work involves fruits, berries, nuts, vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs, and turf. Horticulturists work to improve crop yield, quality, nutritional value, and resistance to insects, diseases, and environmental stresses. Horticulture usually refers to gardening on a smaller scale, while agriculture refers to the large-scale cultivation of crops

Advances in science have lead to fertilizers with compounds more beneficial to plant growth. The main elements beneficial to plant growth are, Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium.

Potassium is especially good for fruit trees as it increase the fruit produced.

Also science has allowed us to grow crops in soils which would normally be to acidic to grow certain crops on. Using bases and alkalis we can alter the pH, to one which is more suitable.

Genetic modification, a somewhat controversial area of science is playing a role in gardening and farming. We are able to create plants with greater resistance to pests and weather. However it may be a long time before you can buy genetically modified plants for your garden. As extensive testing is necessary to see the effect of genetically modified plants on humans and the environment.

However selective breeding, a process based on detailed scientific observations has helped us breed plants with characteristics which were not present at one time.

Such a seedless grapes, and multicoloured flowers as examples.
