transverse waves- the medium vibrates up and down, example- visible light, gamma and xrays. compression/longitudinal- move back and forth and need a medium to travel in. example- slinky.

Compressional waves are closer together, transverse waves are farther apart.

They are both mechanical waves.

In compressional waves the medium moves forward and backward along the direction a wave travels. While, transverse waves the wave energy causes matter in the medium to move up and downor back and forth at right angles to the direction thw wave travels.

Transverse waves are moving waves that consist of oscillations that occur perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer.

Compressed waves are also called longitudinal waves. Also, they move parallel to the directions of its wave motions going closer apart. They vibrate back and forth just like slinky. Transverse wave always vibrates up and down like visible lights, gamma and x-rays. It will also move perpendicular (at right angles to) going further apart.

When the energy is transfered through medium, the particles in the medium have to vibrate simple harmonically. If they vibrated in a perpendicular direction to the direction of propagation of the wave, then it is named as transverse wave. But in longitudinal wave, the vibrations of particles of the medium will be paralled to the direction of propagation of the wave. So this is the most important difference.

Another most important requirement for the propagation of transverse wave through material medium is that the medium has to be cohesive. Hence as gas has no cohesion, no chance for transverse waves to get propagated through gas medium.

Similarity is that in both energy is being porpagated in the form of disturbance.
