the simple rule is that if your density is higher than the substance it will sink and if it is lower it will float density= mass divided by volume. Example:Mass 7.5g Volume:2cm3 so 7.5 Divided by 2= 3.75g/cm3 that is your density of object

A less dense object will rise over a more dense object. Conversely a more dense object will sink under a more dense object. So if an object is less dense than water then it will float. If it is more dense than water, then the water will float on top of the object, meaning, the object will sink.
