THERE IS A DISTINCT POSSIBILITY THAT PROLONGED USE OF WARFARIN MAY AFFECT THE IN BODY CLOTTING INVOLVING PLATELETS. IF THERE IS A PRESSURE FOR BLOOD THINNING AND ANTICOAGULATION ,THE SYSTEM MAY NOT NEED ENOUGH PLATELETS.

IN THE CASE OF THE PATIENT (MY WIFE) ,THE HEART VALVES OPEN HEART SURGERY IS DELAYED ON ACCOUNT OF LOW PLATELET COUNT OF 69,000 AS AGAINST THE NORMAL 150,000. PERHAPS WE MAY HAVE TO WAIT TILL THE COUNT COMES TO NORMAL VALUE.THE PATINT HAD A NEAR NORMAL PLATELET COUNT ONLY 2 MONTHS AGO. THIS HAS GONE DOWN TO 69,000 NOW WITH NO APPERNT ADVERSE EFFECT ON THE PATIENT.

How it works

Low doses of aspirin affect platelet function by primarily inhibiting platelet cyclooxygenase thereby preventing the formation of the aggregating agent thromboxane A2. This action is irreversible and the effects last for the lifetime of the platelet. New platelets are little affected unless aspirin is taken repeatedly.
