How does bullying affect kids learning?

In some cases those children who have been victims of the psychological terrorism of bullies, go through their entire life afraid to challenge injustice. They may become indecisive and have little or no self-confidence. Some people go through life accepting it as normal for others to push them around and take advantage of them.

Some people on the other hand are challenged by the situation to excel and become better than their oppressors. Some people, whose weaknesses are exploited by others, are capable of resourcefully finding ways to enhance their strengths so that it will completely overwhelm their weakness.

Abuse and bullying can interfere with learning because the child is thinking about the problem rather than what is being taught in class. It causes emotional problems that can be long lasting and hurts self confidence and esteem. The bully is really a coward and can only feel good about him or herself by making other people feel bad. I tell my students who are bullied to picture the bully in a big yellow chicken suit squawking and to take away his/her power by walking away laughing inside.
