In 1980, German cave-diver, Jochen Hasenmayer, passed Sump # 25 in Falkensteiner Höhle and discovered Sump # 26.
By turning round and swimming back the way they came! They do however use a guide-line secured at the entrance to the "sump" (water-filled passage) and unwound from a carried reel. That's vital because swimming through the sump can disturb silt that destroys the visibility.
A dry sump is not submerged under water as a wet sump is. a dry sump uses a resivoir to hold the oil much like the brake fluid. a wet sump has the oil sump bolted to the bottom of the engine block :D
