Gamma rays are high energy electromagnetic waves. Therefore, they can only be stopped by thick lead. This means they can easily pass through medical equipment, like syringes. If the syringe is kept in a sealed bag and gamma rays are passed through, they will kill off all living tissue such as viruses and bacteria. This stops the bacteria from reproducing, multiplying and growing, which sterilises the hospital equipment.

Why is sterilising medical equipment done using Gamma do you think that this puts hospital staff at risk Is it worth it?

Gamma radiation is used to sterilize some, but not all medical equipment becks it is very effective and does not damage the equipment on which it is used, nor does it leave a chemical residue. When done correctly radiation sterilization does not put hospital staff at risk.

What are some advantages of gamma rays?

They can be used in medicine to destroy cancer cells. They may also be used to sterilize medical equipment.

Does UV light sterilize utensils?

UV light radiation kills bacteria and can sterilize utensils (UV rays are used to sterilize goggles in the laboratory, for example.

Is ionizing radiation bactericidal?

What is the device use to sterilize equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high pressure saturated steam?

An Autoclave is a device used to sterilize equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high pressure saturated steam.

Damage done to cells by radiation?

it can give you burns and muddle up your DNA to give you mutations, gamma is used to sterilize medical equipment and so destroys all living cells. The damage is all done by induced ionization and the resulting production of free radicles. This results in incorrect chemical reactions in the cells.

Beta radiation used rather than alpha or gamma radiation in this paper thickness equipment?

beta radiation used in this paper thickness equipment because alpha and gamma are very strong radiation which can not be used for paper thickness equipment such as paper are used by every one and it could cause radiation if other nuclear radiation like alpha and gamma are used.

What are the advantage of radiation?

Radiation can be beneficial in diagnosis and treatment of some medical conditions, ranging from X-rays to using specific isotopes to treat cancers. Gamma radiation can be used to sterilise equipment or food by killing bacteria.

What does a dosimetrist do?

A Medical Dosimetrist is a critical member of the Radiation Oncology Team. According to the AAMD (American Association of Medical Dosimetrists), the Medical Dosimetrist is a member of the radiation oncology team who has knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment, is cognizant of procedures commonly used in brachytherapy and has the education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distributions and dose calculations in collaboration with the medical physicist and radiation oncologist.

What piece of equipment do you use to sterilize microbes?

Autoclaves are used to sterilize particular types of equipment by using high pressure saturated steam. Such equipment would be that of laboratory glassware, prosthetics, and tattooing and body piercing utensils.
