It really depends what kind of hair you have. However, the average head hair keeps the sun from sunburning your scalp, since the scalp is sensitive, and to keep the scalp somewhat warm, plus helping the scalp not get scraped. In other words, the theory (yes, it is a theory) is that it is to protect the scalp.
