Dissociation is related to hypnosis in that hypnotic trance also involves a temporarily altered state of consciousness Dissociation was explored and "treated" in the 18th and early 19th centuries through hypnosis, crystal gazing, Ouija boarding, and other parapsychological endeavors. While the effects and benefits of hypnosis are still debated, dissociation (see depersonalization disorder) has yet to find a truly effective cure/treatment.

The ability to be in two places at once. Examples of divided consciousness include watching a television show and playing a game on the computer or driving a car and having a conversation on your cell phone. You may also experience divided consciousness under hypnosis. Some people consider the technological age as increasing the amount of divided consciousness and decreasing face-to-face communication in our society.

Yes. Hypnosis and self hypnosis have been demonstrated to be useful. Not many rigorous medical studies have been done but there is enough evidence out there to suggest many can benefit. Hypnosis is also good for addressing many conditions that affect blood pressure. for example reducing stress/relaxation, losing weight, stopping smoking and reducing alcohol addiction. I have added a link to a site on self hypnosis which can give you more information.

You don't have to have a PhD to know that there is no way to "accurately" answer this. There are a number of different criterion that could be used to state when "consciousness" occurs. And - big surprise - there is still some debate on the nature of consciousness. If the "experts" hold differening ideas on what consciousness is and where it is seated, you can imagine the debate over when it begins. As to the actuall process that "triggers the affect of consciousness" in humans? Your priest or pastor could make as good a guess as anyone in the field of biology or biochimestry. For real.
