How does noise pollution affect the environment?

The loudest possible sound is measured at 194 decibels, hearing tissue is destroyed at 180 decibels. A jet engine at 100 feet is measured at 140 decibels and will cause permanent damage. Pain begins at 125 decibels. City traffic is 85 decibels and a normal conversation 60/65 decibels. All these factors contribute to noise pollution.

Noise pollution includes jet aircraft noise, heavy machinery sounds, industrial operations, traffic and train sounds (bells, whistles, horns), neon light arcing, cacophonous crowd noise, and other sounds, such as the banging and clanging associated with repair and service operations. All of these sounds impair concentration, impede communication, and generally cause irritability for those subjected to them.

Although little can be done in urban environments, noise limitations have sometimes been placed on aircraft, trains, factories, garbage collection, and other noise-creating activities, especially during overnight hours when most people are trying to sleep.
