How does oil give us energy?

Technically, oil does not "create" energy, oil already possesses potential chemical energy in its natural state. Oil may be burned or otherwise converted in a chemical process to release that energy and convert it to heat (directly), to electrical energy by means of powering a generator, or to mechanical energy as in an automobile engine.
