Moral education, whether secular or religious, is concerned with teaching values and virtues. Whether or not original sin is real - it was never recognised by Orthodox Christians or Jews - it defines an inherited flaw that is unrelated to the study of ethics.

The Bible clearly tells us that the originator of sin was Satan and by his tempting of the first man and woman into disobeying God's instructions (Law), sin entered into our world (see Romans 5:12). Since that time, we humans have a predisposition or propensity to sin. Our first parents, primarily Adam's willful disobedience to please Eve, launched the human race on its 'millennia' course of chronic and habitual disobedience - sin.

Though Tertullian was said to allude to 'original sin,' many point to the Origen Homilies on Leviticus 8, circa 248 AD as the first to express the idea of each of us being born with the sin of Adam - original sin. The concept which evolved into a doctrine (actually a theory) was further developed by Augustine and others to its present form. It is not Scriptural but a manmade interpretation of verses in the Bible wedded to pagan philosophical ideas.

Depending upon ones beliefs, instruction/teachings on our value system and virtues of one another, will vary accordingly. Over time, this theory of original sin has been used to explain - even justify - wars, genocide, cruelty of mankind to their fellow man/woman/child, sexual and other exploitation and abuse, and the presence of all wrongs in the world. Many countries educate their masses to beliefs spawned out of this false theory.

What was the orignal sin?

The original sin was Adam and Eve eating the fruit that God told them not to eat. But more than that original sin is the Christian teaching that the propensity and desire to sin was passed down to humanity, and that everyone as soon as they are capable of moral choice, willingly choose to sin. The doctrine of original sin also tells us that all people have rebelled against God and that apart from Jesus, everyone is deserving of eternal separation from God (Hell).
