There are a number of them: the Pulse Oximeter- requiresa pulse so is placed on an artery. It uses red and infrared light to measure the colour of the blood. If blood is oxygenated it is bright red and absorbs/reflects light differently to darker blood which is deoxygenated. Benarons monitor is similar to pulse oximeter but uses shorter light (blue and green). This is used to monitor capillaries and does not require a pulse hence is suitable when perforning things like bypass surgey.

oxygen is measured in the blood by a method called pulse oximetry , a probe is attached to the patients finger or the earlobe in case of a child

the probe has a ultroviolet light which passes from one side to the other and it senses the change in wavelength when it hits the red blood cells which are moving in our cappilaries , a tracing can be seen on the monitor screen and a value will also be given on the screen

this can give an idea about the oxygen levels in the blood

a more accurate method is to puncture the artery , radial artery at the wrist or the femoral artery at the thigh is used most commonly and the blood sample is put into the machine which is called the arterial blood gas machine , it will given an accurate reading of the oxygen levels as well as the saturation of the patient , that is the amount of hemoglobin which contain oxygen

the normal saturation of an adult breathing room air should be above 95 - 96 %
