pH is a measurement of the acidity of a material. Some things live in an acid environment or akaline environment. For example, one plant my thrive in acid soil but die in akaline soil whereas another plant may be just the opposite.

So acid effects some things and akaline effects others. But everything in the environment is exposed to one or the other.
