Smoking has harmful chemicals called nicotine and carbon monoxide. These chemicals make the mother's blood less able to carry oxygen and food to the baby. When You Smoke During Pregnancy * There is a greater chance for miscarriage * You may have a small, sick baby * Your baby may be at greater risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) * Your baby may be earlier than expected * Your baby may be at greater risk of being born with a cleft palate Did You Know... * After just one day of not smoking, your baby will get more oxygen. Each day that you don't smoke you are helping your baby grow! * Inhaling secondhand smoke can be just as harmful to your baby as smoking. If you partner or someone you live with smokes, talk about ways to make your home smoke free. * It is a myth that quitting smoking while pregnant will cause too much stress fro your baby. It is more stressful to your body and more harmful to you and your baby to continue smoking.

Like any other woman, smoking can lead to cancer, Heart disease, lung problems, etc. For pregnant women there is an added risk of harming the unborn child. The biggest problem for the child is being born with a low birth weight, underdeveloped and prematurely.

If you are talking about smoking cigarettes then it can cause a lot of harm to your unborn baby I smoked with both of my kids and wish that I hadn't because now they both have problems with Asthma, bronchitis and when my daughter was born she tested positive for cystic fibrosis and I was scared to death after 3 positive test that I had caused that for her and after the 4th and longest test that she had to go through she tested negative but I felt so bad about smoking with either one of my children and now my sisters baby was born and she smoked a lot during her pregnancy now her son is going through nicotine withdrawals so I would advice that no one smokes during pregnancy for their baby's

Yes it does affect the baby. A mother who smokes may have a baby who smaller in birth weight, often is premature, and could suffer other problems. When I was going to college for my degree in Child Development I remember a film of a fetus of a smoking mother. The picture showed the fluid around the fetus was bright red from the chemicals from smoking. After your baby is born it is important not to smoke as well. More children suffer asthma from smoking parents and Allergies or respiratory problems.

Marijuana:
  • Common slang names: pot, weed, grass and reefer
  • What happens when a pregnant woman smokes marijuana?Marijuana crosses the placenta to your baby. Marijuana, like cigarette smoke, contains toxins that keep your baby from getting the proper supply of oxygen that he or she needs to grow.
  • How can marijuana affect the unborn baby? Studies of marijuana in pregnancy are inconclusive because many women who smoke marijuana also use tobacco and alcohol. Smoking marijuana increases the levels of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the blood, which reduces the oxygen supply to the baby. Smoking marijuana during pregnancy can increase the chance of miscarriage, low birth-weight, premature births, developmental delays, and behavioral and learning problems.
  • What if I smoked marijuana before I knew I was pregnant ?According to Dr. Richard S. Abram, author of Will it Hurt the Baby, "occasional use of marijuana during the first trimester is unlikely to cause birth defects." Once you are aware you are pregnant, you should stop smoking. Doing this will decrease the chance of harming your baby.
