Tobacco in cigarettes and cigars contains nicotine which constricts the walls of the blood vessels. Constriction means the vessel is narrower, requiring the heart to pump harder to push the blood through the narrower vessel, throughout the body, and back to the heart.

Because blood volume, viscosity, nutrient demand of tissues, and many more parameters are variable, our body needs a way to regulate blood pressure. One of the ways to regulate it is to make blood vessels larger or smaller in diameter, which is achieved by constricting or relaxing muscles around blood vessels. The brain has a centre for regulation of blood pressure, which is affected by nicotine. Also, the decreased amount of oxygen in the blood of smokers is a trigger for release of epinephrine (adrenaline) and constriction of blood vessels.

The nicotine from smoking gets into ones blood stream thus causing blood pressure to rise the more nicotine there is in the blood stream.

Because the chemicals in the smoke constrict your blood vessels, making it harder for the heart to pump blood to all of your body. It beats harder, which makes your blood pressure rise. Like a hose turned all the way up, but the nozzle is closed, eventually the hose will burst.

It constricts your blood vessels, making your blood pressure raise. Long term effects of smoking, can also lead to dementia as the higher the blood pressure, the more likely you are to have "mini strokes" in the brain, and in turn can lead to Multi Infarct Dementia where parts of the brain die off.

High blood pressure can also lead to lots more illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease, as well as heart attacks.

smoking causes all of your blood vessels to constrict (tighten and narrow) and makes your heart work harder, beat faster and causing it to enlarge. It also deprives your organs of oxygen..quit as soon as you can and you will feel much better I promise

There are links between smoking and high blood pressure. I would recommend quitting smoking by any means available to you. Personally, I would suggest the 'e-cig' or electronic cigarette. These do work, and the only thing you would exhale is a water vapor, and you can use them practically anywhere (including on a plane). I would also recommend nicotine patches, but NOT the clear patches. The clear patches do not work as well as the manufacturers claim. There is a minor issue with the transdermal adhesive. If at all possible, look for NicoDerm CQ patches that aren't clear. These patches do work. The 'step-down' program works as well, you've just got to want to quit, and that's the biggest hurdle you'll ever face.
