Tabaco itself doesn't affect you lungs at all. However when it is smoked in cigarettes it can cause tar build up in you lungs, also cause respiratory problems such as emphysema, and even cancer.
I assume you're talking about marijuana because of the category.
Here is the basic idea: the cheaper it is, the more random crap can be found in the marijuana. In fact, a lot of mj has more tar content than cigarettes. And, since it is smoked without a filter, it can be extremely harsh on your lungs, even causing cancer.
Basic rule of thumb, if you want cleaner herb, buy good herb. Or get a vaporizer, those are an extremely clean method of smoking.
Smoking, working in a smoking or dusty environment.

the lungs.
does a cigarettes affect the lungs \
It does extremely disgusting things to your body. Tobacco effects the function of your lungs and if your lungs don't work properly then toxin particles in your lungs won't be cleared efficiently which can lead to respiratory diseases like lung cancer and emphysema. Also, tar collects in your lungs. (yuck!!) tobacco also stains teeth, causes bad breath and decreases the ability to smell and taste. AND The carbon monoxide and nicotine found in tobacco may cause throat, mouth and esophageal cancers. So yeah, don't try tobacco. resource: http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4566829_tobacco-affect-body.html
