Sickle Cell Anemia is a inherited trait through genes from either a carrier, or someone who already has it. For example

"A" represents dominant normal blood cell

"s" represents recessive sickle anemia gene

AA= normal (doesn't have sickle cell anemia)

AS= carrier (carries the gene for sickle cell anemia, but has little to know effects from it)

SS= has sickle cell anemia

If you have a cross between a parent with the normal gene "AA" and a carrier "AS" you will have a two-in-four chance of having a child without sickle cell anemia and a two-in-four chance of having a child that carries the gene but does not have it which would be "AS"

If you have a parent whom is a carrier and another parent whom is a carrier you will have one-in-four chance of a child with normal blood cells, two-in-four chance of having a child which carries the gene, and one-in-four chance of a child who actuall has sickle cell anemia.

If you cross to people with sickle cell anemia "SS" their children will have the mutation.

Sickle cell anemia is characterized by abnormally shaped red blood cells, which are not as efficient at oxygen transport as normally shaped red blood cells and can cause blood clots. It is a genetic disease, which you get by inheriting the genes from your parents.

It is an inherited condition. A person can either be a carrier by having only one allele for sickle cell or have sickle cell anemia by inheriting two alleles.

How does sickle-cell trait differ from sickle-cell disease?

in sickle cell trait you don't actually have the disease. you are only able to pass the disease to your kids if you marry a person with sickle cell or that also has the trait. sickle cell disease is when you actually have the disease. you can pass it to your kids if you marry someone with the trait or the disease. if you marry someone without a trait or disease then your kids will most likely have the trait.
