The definition of Asthma; a disease of the respiratory system, sometimes caused by Allergies, with symptoms including coughing, sudden difficulty in breathing, and a tight feeling in the chest (Encarta® World English Dictionary[North American Edition], 2009). Asthma is a chronic a lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. The airways of the lungs are the tubes that transport air in and out of the body. Asthma patient's airways are inflamed and sensitive to certain substances. When the airway reacts to these substances the muscles in the airway start tightening and narrowing the airway and prevents the normal amount of air to the lungs. Cells in the airway will start to produce thick mucus that causes more narrowing and that also prevents airflow to the lungs (NHLBI, 2008, para.4). The inflammation and narrowing worsens, breathing becomes more labored and less oxygen is able to pass through, this is called an asthma attack also called a flare up or exacerbation.
Well when ever you smoke you let in all the chemical in your body, which will affect your lungs and damage the respiratory system. This causes the body not to function properly and make you respiratory system work harder and this may lead to death.
Asthma is inflammation caused by an irritant or can be caused by exercise. The inflammation causes increased amounts of mucus to be produced in the lungs. Bronchospasms also occur as part of this process which narrow the bronchi causing the wheezing sound often associated with asthma.
