Telescopes are used to seek out specific stars, planets, nebulas, comets, etc.
Also, some other telescopes are used to just seek out objects at a far distance.
Telescopes are very cool when you can spot planets outside in the dark sky! :)

∙ 12y agoVisual Telescopes are telescopes that usually work on the ground. the use a lens that reflects into the sky and shows the universe from a certain distance. Visual Telescopes do not travel very far the average distance you can see from one is as far as Pluto (an average Telescope) Hope this is the answer you've been looking for!

∙ 13y agoRefracting telescope depend on one amazing fact,as light pass through glass,it slows down.slowing down a light beam makes it bent.when a light beam pass through a glass lens inside a telescope,it moves toward the lens.when the light beam comes out the other side,its bent.
The shape of the lens make light near the top of the lens bent down and light near the bottom of the lens is bent up.somewhere inside the tube,the light beam cross,but before they can spread out again.the eyepiece bents the light beam again and send them to the eye.

In space, they can see better because there is no atmosphere to interfere with sight. This gives a much clearer, sharper view.
Why does photographs from telescopes in space show the nebula more clearly?
Space-based telescopes can see further in space as they don't have to make do with a disturbing atmosphere (slight differences in temperature in atmospheric layers lead to perturbations of photos). So, very long exposures (over hours) can reasonably be made without having to fear such undesired phenomena. Very long exposures also means that the very faint sources of light (at the edge of the observable universe) can also be pictured so that they can be distinguished from the background noise. This way, space telescopes see further.
