Antigens are protein markers on the surface of cells and viruses that help the immune system identify a foriegn cell or virus. It serves as the first sign of detection to finding a foreign particle and triggers an immune response if it encounters or detects a pathogen.

There are white blood cells whose function is to detect foreign invaders and to alert other white blood cells to attack the invaders. These white blood cells have been programmed to recognize the chemical signature of the body that they live in (also known as the histocompatibility index). When they detect a different type of chemical, they consider it to be an invader.

Glycoproteins mark the cell as part of the body; foreign bacterial cells won't have this marking and therefore are not recognized as part of the body.

Antibodies defend us from invaders like bacteria. They seek and destroy toxins and viruses in our blood.

Sometimes your body will not have the antibodies it needs to defend itself. Such as a deadly highly venomous snake bite. You will die unless injected with specific antibodies designed to attack the snake venom. Some snake handlers have been bit so many times that venom no longer has an effect on them because their body has learned to produce its own antibodies against the venom. This can also be true for illnesses like the cold or flu.
