The darkness of a colored item can determine how much heat it reflects, as well as how much light it reflects. For example, cars of a darker color, or clothing of a darker color, will absorb more heat than lighter ones when placed in sunlight.

There is a basic experiment you can perform.

  1. Get a pair of socks. Dye one sock black and leave the other white. (Or simply find two socks made of the same material, one much darker than the other.)
  2. Put them on your feet and go out into the sun with them (be sure they stay clean!)
  3. Lay down, prop your feet up, and point both feet at the sun.
  4. You will notice that the black sock gets much warmer, much faster.

Experiment with various colors. Darker socks should get warmer.

White light (the light from the sun) contains all the colors of the spectrum. Light also carries heat. When you wear a white sock, all the colors of the spectrum are reflected back. Very little light is absorbed so little heat is absorbed.

A black sock on the other hand absorbs all colors of the spectrum. So lots of light is absorbed and with it, lots of heat. Different colors reflect more or less light back. This means that different colors also absorb different amounts of heat.

When you where dark clothing it attracts the sun rays more then a light colored shirt would, therefore dark clothing will make it hotter when the suns out.
