A solid has air gaps. Density is mass per volume. Volume of the known mass of solid is determined by displacement of liquid in which the solid is insoluble. In case of liquid, the mass of known volume of liquid is determined.

Density is mass divided by volume. To measure the volume of a liquid, you can pour it into a calibrated beaker or equivalent. To measure the volume of a solid, you can measures its dimensions and calculate volume, or you can dip it into a liquid of known volume and measure the change in apparent volume. Mass, in both cases, is measured the same way.

Volume measurement by dipping was the discovery of Archimedes, when he realized that the level of a bath he entered rose as he entered it.

Density = mass divided by volume. If you have the mass and the volume, there you go.

You can remember the formula in the following way: if you write m/v vertically, it can look like a heart. Then you say to yourself: "Gotta love density!"

You can find the volume of a liquid by measuring it in a graduated cylinder or something. You can find the volume of a solid by several means, including:

*finding how much water it displaces when placed in a graduated cylinder

*careful measurements and calculus

*looking at the number in your textbook

What are the units for density for a irregulary shaped object?

The units are the same for any object (for example, kilogram/m3). What changes is the methods you can use to measure it.

What is the difference between true density and tapped density?

· Tap Density: The density of a powder when the volume receptacle is tapped or vibrated under specified conditions while being loaded. Each particle of a solid material has the same true density after grinding, milling or processing, but more geometric space is occupied by the material. In other words, the geometric density is less... approaching 50% less than true density if the particles are spherical. Handling or vibration of powdered material causes the smaller particles to work their way into the spaces between the larger particles. The geometric space occupied by the powder decreases and its density increases. Ultimately no further natural particle packing can be measured without the addition of pressure. Maximum particle packing is achieved. Under controlled conditions of tap rate, tap force (fall) and cylinder diameter, the condition of maximum packing efficiency is highly reproducible. This tap density measurement is formalized in the British Pharmacopoeia method for Apparent Volume, ISO 787/11 and ASTM standard test methods B527, D1464 and D4781 for tap density.· True Density: The true density of powders often differs from that of the bulk material because the process of comminution, or grinding will change the crystal structure near the surface of each particle and therefore the density of each particle in a powder. In addition, voids at the surface of a particle, into which liquids will not penetrate, can generate apparent volume which will cause serious errors when density is measured by liquid displacement. The pycnometer G-DenPyc 2900 from Gold APP Instruments are specifically designed to measure the true volume of solid materials by employing Archimedes' principle of fluid (gas) displacement and the technique of gas expansion. True densities are measured using helium gas since it will penetrate every surface flaw down to about one Angstrom, thereby enabling the measurement of powder volumes with great accuracy. The measurement of density by helium displacement often can reveal the presence of impurities and occluded pores which cannot be determined by any other method.

What are the methods of adding and subtracting vector quantities?

adding vectorsTo add two vectors, s+z, simply move the vector z to the end of the vector s.subtracting vectorsTo find the magnitude and direction of the difference between two vectors, s-z, simply draw a vector from z to s

What is the difference between evaporation and sputtering deposition?

Both methods are used for physical vapour deposition. The evaporation method involves evaporation of the material by making it subject to heat. A film is deposited on the subtrate due to condensation of this vapour. In soutter deposition, the target material is bombarded with energitic ions. Some atoms will be released by this action. These are then condensed to substrate.

What are the methods of finding population density?

One method would be to find the total number of people living in the region divided by the total area of the region. Other methods are just alternatives to this and depend on what you are finding. For example, you could use the total land area, total urban area etc.

How does the method of calculating the volume of a substance affect the substance's density?

If two different people use two different methods to calculate the density of a sample of the same substance, and they get two different answers, then at least one of them made a mistake. If the method of calculation makes a difference, then the whole concept of density is out the window. The only possible difference between two statements of the density of a substance should be the units in which the density is stated. But one unit can always be converted to the other, and when they're both in the same units, they had better both be the same number.
