Triage is the evaluation of injury -- the most critical, life-threatening is decided to be of the first priority and is treated first. The next most serious is treated next and so on. Triage is the method by which the patients are assigned priority for treatment.

In a Mass Casualty Incident, there are numerous patients which can sometimes out number the care providers. They need an efficient way of treating patients in a high stress environment and triage is one of them. In triage, there are black, red, yellow, and green tag colors. Black stands for a patient who is deceased. Red stands for the patient who is in a critical condition and needs medical care like... yesterday and they are circling the drain. Those are the first priority patients for care and transport if they are salvageable and have a high chance for survival. Yellow stands for those who have fairly serious injuries or are in serious conditions but have an even higher survival rate than those tagged red. They do not require extravagant and extreme measures of medical care in order to save their lives. Finally, the green tag stands for the "walking and wounded." Those patients either do not need to be transported and require the minimal, if any, medical treatment. They are last priority and have the highest survival rate. Based on the most critical, EMS and other care providers can develop a system that allows for the greatest potential for survival. If they cared for the "green patients" over the "red patients" more lives would be lost.

Triage is used when treating more than one victim. Organising the victims by degrees of severity, for instance, so the critical patients get treated first leaving the minor injuries for last.
