The functions of the blood as it travels around the human body is to deliver oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and removing carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs. The blood also helps bone structure by carrying calcium to the bones.

The function of the blood is mainly transportation. the blood leaves the left side of the heart oxygenated and full of nutrients which is then transported around the body via arteries and veins. Blood is 50% plasma which is a straw coloured liquid. The other components in blood are : Red blood cells ( Erythrocytes) 40- 45% these carry O2 and nutrients. White blood cells ( Leukocytes) These are for use in fighting infection and make up part of your lymphatic system. And Platelets (Thrombocytes) These cells clot when exposed to air preventing you from bleeding to death when you get cut.

After delivering the nutrients and oxygen to the necessary areas the blood then removes carbon dioxide and waste products.

Hope that helps :)

  • Your blood is pumped by your heart.
  • Your blood travels through thousands of miles of blood vessels right within your own body.
  • Your blood carries nutrients, water, oxygen and waste products to and from your body cells.
  • A young person has about a gallon of blood. An adult has about 5 quarts.
  • Your blood is not just a red liquid but rather is made up of liquids, solids and small amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Blood carries oxygen to the cells throughout the entire body, and clears the carbon dioxide from the cells to be expelled by the body via the lungs. If it didn't travel around the body, it wouldn't be able to move anything and the cells would not get the things they require and thus would die.

Blood is pumped around the body by the heart. The arteries take the blood away from the heart. The veins are used to return the blood to the lungs where the blood is reoxygenated and then pumped by the heart around the body again

Very simply put, blood is pumped to the body cells by the heart and returned back to be pumped to the lungs to pick up oxygen and drop off carbon dioxide.
