It is very easy, @ $200 they are charging you almost $100 for 15 minutes of labor. 2nd Answer: I had the 02 sensor changed on my 98 Cherokee. My mechanic is old school, and allowed me to watch, literally right under the truck while it was on the lift. It took LESS THAN 5 minutes, and he told me the part cost about $40 (it's a cable with a sensor on it that runs from the exhaust system to the motor, about 12 to 18 inches long). He didn't charge me, as I'd bought it used from him, with this pre-existing problem with the 02 sensor.

I had that same exact problem with a 1995 Jeep Cherokee, and it was indeed a bad oxygen sensor. Relatively cheap repair too.

OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer. The Oxygen sensor senses amounts of oxygen in the exuast to adjust the fuel mixture acordingly.

# The sensor is located in the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe and is accessible from under the vehicle # Since the oxygen sensor may be difficult to remove with the engine cold begin by operating the engine until it has warmed to atleast 120 degrees # Disconnect the electrical wire from the oxygen sensor and carefully unscrew the oxygen sensor from the exhaust pipe.Be adviced that excessive force may damage the threads inspect the oxygen sensor for damage unless you are replacing it

The Oxygen Sensor on a 1989 Cherokee 4.0L is on the exhaust pipe on the left side of the engine just below the exhaust manifold. You can see it from above but you must replace it from below. It is pretty easy to reach. I recently changed mine and it took only 10 minutes using an O2 sensor wrench.
