If police do a criminal background check how far back do they go?

They can go back as they want - limited only by how far the carrier keeps them on file, carriers usually store them for 1 year and there is no legal requirement for them to be stored longer. So even if they kept them longer they are not stupid enough to divulge that to random police people who can directly publicize these matters as they aren't bound to keep phone company secrets.

∙ 6y agoIt depends on the circumstance and where this is taking place.
If you were applying for a law enforcement (or similar) job, everything will be revealed, period.
If Law Enforcement are checking it on a routine case, they're most likely only looking for active cases, or very recent cases.
In many cases, they can only find about ten years of information, but you should assume they can go back to any adult case, whether that be true or not.
