You are thinking of the Long Walk in 1866-6. It was not to Fort Defiance it was to Fort Sumner, in an area called Bosque Redondo. It is called Hwéeldi is Navajo. There was not one long walk but rather up to 53 different groups forced to walk there. How far they walked depended on where they started, Navajo country is huge. Most walked about 300 to 450 miles over seven different routes. It took about 18 days. Returning it was one group and they stretched over ten miles long on the trail.
