After the Second World War, Australia reformed its Immigration policy, which resulted in an influx of new people into the country, and the economy boomed, especially the manufacturing industry. During World War 2, over 27,000 Australians were killed, and thousands more were wounded.

After World War II, Australia became a very attractive place for immigrants from Europe, especially those displaced by the ravages of war. New building projects brought many immigrants to Australia. The Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme alone offered thousands of immigrants employment in a safe country. Thus, Australia became more multicultural than ever. Post war fear, however, did tend to make many Australians wary of the possible infiltration of communism: this fear remained for several decades as the world was gripped by the reality of the Cold War and the rise of nuclear weapons.

Post-war Australia offered opportunities that many other countries could not: freedom of religion, freedom of political thought, freedom of choosing one's children's education. It also offered the chance for people to own their own home with a decent sized plot of land, so the "backyard with the veggie garden" became quite the norm.

Since the Second World War, Australia has been accepting more and more migrants. As such, the society has changed from being almost completely Anglo-Celtic to one which embraces other cultures. White Europeans were allowed in shortly after the war and when the 'White Australia Policy' was abolished in 1973, it brought an influx of Asian immigrants whom today make up around 10% of the population.
