The earliest cellos were smaller and held between the knees. They didn't have endpins and there was no ebony on them, which made them lighter. Before the Baroque period people played the viola da gamba which is quite similar to a cello in range. The original cello had 5 strings due to lack of changing position.

∙ 11y agoThe cello was invented as a large violin in the 1500s , about 100 years ago. A violin maker Antonio Stradivari started to make cellos that stood upright like a modern cello
