The Tower of London was built as a fortress and Royal Residence and still has a small military garrison. At one time it housed the royal menagerie. It was also used as a prison and Rudolf Hess was incarcerated there during World War 2. It now houses the British Crown jewels and is a museum. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the UK.
