The traffic light was first invented and used on December 10th 1868, this light unlike modern lights was hand operated by a police officer, which made it far less practical than that of the modern light. Eventually in 1912, the first known modern electric traffic light was used, this light used the red green light system. However these lights were rather simplistic using a two color red green system and as a substitute for yellow, a buzzer that alerted drivers of a color change. The first four way tri-color traffic light was created in 1920 police officer William Potts. And in 1922 another innovation came into play, in Houston Texas, the first interconnected automatic street light was deployed. However, generally from this time on their has been little more than style change, the shape, locations and computing systems have been updated, but the general concept has remained the same.
