While travelling through Mirkwood, the group see fires and hear singing which is wood elves feasting. The group are starving so repeatedly attempt and fail to talk to the elves to ask for food. Each time the fires go out and the elves are gone.
In the last attempt, when the fires go out, Bilbo cannot find any of the others in the dark and ends up getting further and further away from them. Eventually he decides to wait for some daylight before atttempting to find them.
During the escape from Goblin-town, Bilbo was knocked unconscious and he fell into one of the side passages, where he was not discovered. The Dwarves ran on, trying to escape, and didn't realize Bilbo wasn't with them. They waited outside for some time, hoping he would appear, and were nearly ready to go on without him when he finally made it out.
It occurred while they were escaping from the goblins. At some point he had fallen and been knocked out. Both the goblins and the dwarves had overlooked him in the dark fights.
