The cacao plant from which chocolate is made is native to the Americas, and people have used it for thousands of years. In Mayan mythology, cacao was not created by the gods, but discovered by them in the mountains as part of a trove of delicious foods. In due course, a god named Sovereign Plumed Serpent passed the secret of cacao on to the Maya. The Mayan people of Central America and Mexico had a cacao god named Ek Chuah, whom they honored with a festival each April. Along with the usual animal sacrifices, they celebrated by exchanging gtifts.
