The majority of Arabia was Pagan before the coming of Islam. They believed in many gods (represented by idols made of stone), it's thought that there were at least 365. The gods & goddeses had names like Aglibol, Atargatis, Hubal, Ishtar, Al-Uzza, Al-Manat, Al-Lat, Wadd, Bes (same as Egyptian Bast), Bel Shamen, Abgal, Astarte, Nergal etc. As you can see one difference is that Islam is purely monotheistic whilst Arabian paganism is polytheistic. Another difference is that using pictures to depict God is totally forbidden in Islam whilst it was common place in pagan Arabia. The pagan Arabs also had many traditions & customs which are contrary to Islam.

The pre-Islamic Arabs practiced a religion, paganism with numerous gods, who were worshiped. They had had an idea of an All-Supreme power controlling the Universe, His Wrath and Favour, the life after death and the angels. But all these ideas had been adulterated with idolatry. Tradition has it, every household had their own god! Islam however introduced the religion of one God, Al-Lah, the second to do so, after Judiasm.

In addition, the pagan Arabs also looked upon their priests with the same reverence as they had for their gods. Apart from this, the Arabs also held veneration for "future-tellers", or "kahins" as they called it, they were offered sacrifices in return for a glimpse in the future. Islam, however has nothing to do with such. Islam vividly endorses God's absolute power and Him being held highest in regard, it also emphasizes on equality.

History reveals the fact that fire was also worshipped in Arabia as a symbol of divine power. This practice seems to have penetrated in the Arab lands from their neighboring country, Persia
