A Dictatorship is a style of government where there is a single person who has total control of governmental decisions. On the other hand, a democracy is a style of government where the people vote on which people are allowed to influence governmental decisions.
It is a common mis-perception that there is necessarily a difference. Many times the major difference between a dictatorship and a democracy is there is usually just one tyrant in a dictatorship and several million in a democracy. The Propaganda put forth that democracies are governments of freedom because of a "one person, one vote" or "direct vote" policy misses the point of freedom. The ability to elect government officials is not what makes people free. It is the common and natural right to live free, to live ones life without government interference. Good luck in keeping the government at bay in a democracy. If one wants to keep the tyrants at bay, it is better to place limitations on what a government can do. A direct democracy does no such thing. The root word for democracy is Greek for 'mob rule". Uh-oh.
In democracy, citizens can express their opinions freely without any obstacle or hindrance, whereas under dictatorial rule, freedom of expression, right to practice religious rituals of minorities are severely curtailed. Under dictatorship, administration is governed by the whims of the dictator, where religious fundamentalism raises its head as History will tell with ample evidences. In democracy as defined by Abraham Lincoln "Government of the people, by the people, for the people",common citizens have the right to topple a Government by ballots and not bullets whom they find are not looking after their welfare.
Only one person in a dictatorship.
The government is controlled by one person
Very simple. Democracy allows, or attempts to allow, people to govern themselves and decide how they will live. Theoretically no one is above the law in a democracy. With a dictatorship people are told what to do and how to live, and they have no say in the matter. It is possible for a dictatorship to be benevolent and a democracy to be unjust, but people will often choose democracy over dictatorship, if they have a choice.
It is a democracy, but it used to be a dictatorship.
