The word galaxy derives from the Greek term for our own galaxy, galaxias (γαλαξίας), or kyklos galaktikos, meaning "milky circle" for its appearance in the sky.

The word galaxy derives from Greek galaxias (γαλαξίας), or kyklos galaktikos, meaning "milky circle" for its appearance in the sky.

In Greek mythology, Zeus places his son born by a mortal woman, the infant Heracles, on Hera's breast while she is asleep so that the baby will drink her divine milk and will thus become immortal. Hera wakes up while breastfeeding and then realizes she is nursing an unknown baby: she pushes the baby away and a jet of her milk sprays the night sky, producing the faint band of light known as the Milky Way. A 'galaxy' can be defined as follows:
1) any disk-shaped, elliptically-shaped, or irregularly shaped luminous cluster of stars and interstellar matter occupying a vast region of space that is held together by gravitation and is one of the components that make up the observable universe
2) the disk-shaped luminous cluster of stars and interstellar matter that stretches over a vast region of the night sky of which the solar system is a part; the Milky Way, also called the Milky Way Galaxy or simply the Galaxy
3) a group of outstanding performers in any line of work

Here is how I define the word 'galaxy':

NOUN

1) a single distinct, gravitationally bound interstellar system in space that is believed to contain a very massive black hole in its center and coming in various shapes such as spiral, barred spiral, elliptical, and irregular

2) the interstellar system containing the Earth and seen edge-on as a luminous band of starlight stretching across the night sky

3) any group of famous or successful people in a given field of activity or of distinct objects

What galaxy is an irregular galaxy?

An Irregular Galaxy is a galaxy that has no shape or form as defined by the classes of the "Hubble sequence" An Amorphous galaxy is a galaxy that has neither spiral nor elliptical in shape as defined by "The Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies". See related links for pictorial representation

Which of these is a grouping of billions of stars, gas, and dust held together by gravity?

A galaxy. We live in one corner of a galaxy that we have named the "Milky Way" galaxy. It is thought to contain anywhere from 200 to perhaps 400 billion stars. The grouping of billions of stars, gas, and dust into a physically metastable rotating state by gravity is, by definition, a galaxy.

What is the size of the Andromeda galaxy?

I think it is very difficult to define size to a galaxy, as there is not real cut off point. Recent observations showed a "halo" of Stars around the Galaxy - a bit like suburbs to a city. Putting the size to 500,000 light years across. Current thoughts are that it is twice the size of our own Galaxy, so around 200,000 light years across. Maybe someone else can contribute a more recent guesstimate.

How big is the Andromeda galaxy in relation to the Milky Way?

It's difficult to define a galaxies size, as there is no real cut off point. From estimations, the Andromeda is about twice as large as the Milky Way.
