In the concert band, string basses are often found doubling the tubas, given their ability to sustain notes indefinitely, as well as provide a more percussive pizzicato sound than the tubas can. In transcriptions, they often play highly technical orchestral bass parts that can't be reasonably reproduced on a brass instrument.

∙ 11y agoThere are several method books, the most popular being Simandl and Billé. Although jazz is primarily played pizzicato, many of the best known players play with the bow or even had classical instruction. Both Oscar Pettiford and Ron Carter play the cello as well, and Paul Chambers though his sound is rough with a bow borrowed from classical playing.
A difference to be aware of between String Bass and Electric Bass is that in the low positions only the Index, Middle, and Pinky finger are used to articulate the notes in the left hand, spanning an interval of a Major Second. This means that the technique requires much more shifting and has to be deliberately understood to be performed effectively.
