I suppose it is presented as an unfortunate reality. Peter doesn't set out to be a deceptive person, but to protect himself and other people from abuse, he lives a life that is hidden from his family and larger community, and only shared with his closest friends, who also share his secret... but the ideal is still a community where you don't have to hide, thus the ending.
