Modern Fairy Tales are children's stories with fairies, elves, gnomes etc involving evil witches/persons but have a happy ending. Many stories that we call fairy tales really have roots in very ancient oral traditions possibly going back as far as thousands of years. These traditions usually touch upon deep universal themes like fear, rights of passage, integrity, kingship, warrior courage, priesthood/shamanism, deception and manipulation. Aesop's Fables are included in this store of rich ancient wisdom/lore. Many of these tales and fables have anything but happy endings in some of their older and presumably more authentic versions.

Fantasy stories are usually modern stories, often based in one or more of the ancient traditions mentioned above. They include spectacular fanciful fictions, told in any possible setting including imagined ancient worlds, contemporary or futuristic Science Fiction, and anything in between. They are sometimes written to reflect a current world social or cultural dilemma. The original Star Trek series is an excellent example from popular culture, along with the writings of authors like Asimov, Herbert, Philip K. Dick, H. P. Lovecraft, Tolkein, C. S. Lewis, J. K. Rowling and many others.
Fairy tales can be

  1. stories about fairies, or
  2. incredible stories, unbelievable fabrications.

A fantasy 'story' is

  1. an imaginary story of a fanciful, spectacular and extravagant nature, with invented or visionary images being conveyed to the reader/viewer.

CONSIDER:

  • A fairy story would doubtless be fantasy.
  • On the other hand, if fairies exist, maybe a fairy story is true, and not fantasy!
  • A science-fiction story would inevitably be fantasy, but would not usually be associated with matters common to fairy tales.
Science-fiction is generally concerned with science and technology, and set in the future, whereas fairy tales are are invariably set in the past, and 'magic' is a key element of fairy stories, which are about fairies, and similar entities, and their dealings and interactions with each other and with humans.

SUMMARY/CONCLUSIONS

A fairy tale may be fantasy, but not all fantasies are fairy tales.

Fairy tales are invariable set in the past and are stories about fairies.

Fantasies can be set in any time frame, and, whilst being highly creative and imaginative, do not usually or necessarily focus on matters of the fairy world.

A cartoon is an animated human made character with like a flip book or comic strip while a fairytale is a type of cartoon. The fairytale is a cartoon though made into a story it branched off of the cartoon. As well many fairytales end in a happy ending while Cartoons are humorous and an enjoyment to the family.

Folktales- stories from different cultures that were told and passed down from generation to generation.

Myths- Stories that when they were first created were thought to be true such as the stories in Greek Mythology were thought to be true back in ancient Greece, Roman Mythology was thought to be true around the time of the Roman Empire and Egytian Mythology was thought to be true back in ancient Egypt.

Fairytales- Just little made up stories that are centuries old, they are pretty much folktales but they dont speak of the culture and society as folktales do

In many cases, the difference is the inclusion of technology. You can argue that Star Wars is really a fairy tale, for instance.
