These are the two names that Billy sees carved on the old sycamore tree where he is camping out on his way home. Billy had gone to that campsite a long time ago and found the magazine ad telling him how to order the coon hounds. Then he also found the KC baking soda can there, which is what he used to save his money while he earned cash for the dogs. When Billy returns to the campsite a few years later, this time he has his two little puppies with him that he had just picked up in town. He looks up and sees the two names carved on the tree: Dan and Ann. It's just too perfect, Billy thinks to himself. This is where he finds the names of his dogs, and this is also where he first dreamed of getting those two little dogs. He had knelt there and prayed for the dogs, and God answered his prayers. That's why he named the dogs Old Dan and Little Ann.

Old Dan is brave, strong, and a dark brown color, and he won't let a coon go no matter what, he wont hunt without little ann and will only hunt with billy, and gets into trouble a lot. Little Ann is smart, light brown color, funny, follows old dan around, and gets into trouble once in a while.
Little Ann bravely entered the muskrat den and pulled Old Dan out by grabbing his neck and pulling him to safety. Her quick thinking and courage saved Old Dan from drowning in the den.

In Chapter 19 of "Where the Red Fern Grows," Little Ann dies after succumbing to injuries sustained during a mountain lion attack. Her death is a heartbreaking moment for the characters and readers alike.
