Opals are formed when silica (SiO2) spheres all of a similar size, are arranged into a cubic close packed structure. This structure has the ability to diffract certain wavelengths of light based on the spacing in between layers of silica and the size of the spheres that make up the FCC lattice too. This is the basis for photonic crystals that can be created synthetically today.

This non-crystalline form of quartz is deposited at a fairly low temperature. Water collects the silica and forms a solution that can collect in the fissures of nearly any rock. Once the water evaporates, the opal deposit is left behind.

Current scientific theory states that opals can take thousands, even millions of years, to form. However, an Australian fossicker has proven that, given the right conditions, the process can actually take place over a matter of months. See the related link below.

Opal is formed from a solution of silicon dioxide and water. As water runs down through the earth, it picks up silica from sandstone, and carries this silica-rich solution into cracks and voids , caused by natural faults or decomposing fossils. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind a silica deposit.95% of the world’s opals are found in Australia, with the rest found in Brazil, Mexico, Honduras and the western US.

It's mined out of the ground as opal dirt. The opals are then separated from the dirt and sent off to other places to be polished and cut.

What chemical formula is opal made from?

Opal is a mineraloid gel. It is made, oddly enough, almost entirely of opal. It is also completely free of birefringence, and has virtually no pleochroism. Opal is basically silica. Saying opal is made of opal is like saying quartz is made of quartz, or tiger eye is made of tiger eye. It's the unique structure of the silica that makes it become opal. The Japanese have made a nice man made opal using silica and zirconium oxide. Si02nH20
