The purchase from France in 1803 more than doubled the size of the US overnight, and fueled the westward expansion of the country. It meant that the US would occupy the interior of the continent, and ultimately the Southwest and Pacific coast as well. The history of the US might have been vastly different without it. The agricultural, manufacturing, and commercial status of the country today is due substantially to that historical agreement.
