Best Answer

Macbeth is traditionally viewed as a tragic hero in literature because he possesses noble traits but ultimately falls from grace due to his fatal flaw. However, his actions and decisions throughout the play, such as the murder of King Duncan and his descent into madness, often lead to his portrayal as a villain rather than a hero. Ultimately, his character is complex and open to interpretation by readers and audiences.

Macbeth [c. 1014-August 15, 1057] was considered a hero. He was the doer of great deeds, and the possessor of great powers or strength. Both of these qualities were evidenced in Act 1 Scene 2 of the Shakespearean play. For example, he threw himself into the midst of the bloodied fray. The tide of the battle was very much against the defenders of King Duncan I [d. August 14, 1040] of Scotland. The tide was very much for first the supporters of Macdonwald the traitorous Scotsman; and then the supporters of King Sweno [c. 1016-1035] of Norway and of the Thane of Cawdor. But Macbeth hacked his way to victory for his king and his country.

Easy- as the main protagonist of a Shakespearean Tragedy, it follows Aristotle's Poetic's Theory of Tragedy- which, watered down, says that the character follows an inevitable cause-and-effect chain (fated, Aristotle would say):the character takes action that has an unintended outcome, there is a realization between the main opposing forces- and finally the catastrophe, which ultimately brings about the death of the protagonist. All of which Shakespeare's Macbeth posesses. Tragic, isn't it?

Macbeth allowed his wife is convince him that he needed to be king and to kill Duncan. He really wasn't up to the task or really wanted it. This makes him tragic since he went against his basic instincts and didn't listen to the warning of the witches. He was forewarned what his fate would be.

Yes. He is the central character and it is he that we focus on. Whether or not he fits someone's arcane description of a "tragic hero" (probably AC Bradley's) doesn't matter. Macbeth is the main character, and the tragedy is his tragedy. We regret the wasteful loss of his talents in such a destructive way.

No. But he is not necessarily a Villain, either. He is a victim of many tragic flaws, and suffers accordingly.

How important are the 3 witches in building up Macbeth as the tragic hero?

The witches don't make Macbeth perform any dark acts, such as killing King Duncan; they just put the idea in his head. The witches tell Macbeth he is the Thane of Cawdor (which he doesn't know yet) and also tell him that he will be king. Once Macbeth finds out he is in fact the Thane of Cawdor, he begins to believe the witches' prophecies. Lady Macbeth convinces him that the only way Macbeth can be king is by killing King Duncan, and he does so. The witches' role in making Macbeth a tragic hero is to serve a catalyst for Macbeth's dark thoughts.

How was Macbeth different from other villains in Shakespeare's plays?

Macbeth is unique among Shakespeare's villains because he starts out as a noble and loyal soldier before he is driven to commit evil deeds. Unlike other villains who are motivated by power or vengeance from the beginning, Macbeth's descent into villainy is a gradual process influenced by supernatural forces and his own ambition. Additionally, Macbeth's moral struggle and internal conflict set him apart from other villains in Shakespeare's works.

Is Macbeth an epic hero?

Yes, Macbeth [c. 1014-August 15, 1057] was a typical tragic hero. A hero did great deeds, and showed great powers or strength. In the Shakespearean play, Macbeth was Scotland's bravest and noblest defender. He always put himself in the bloodiest midst of the most violent of frays and hacked his way to victory for king and country. He therefore was the doer of great deeds by his possession of great power and strength. Macbeth also was tragic in his heroism. The tragedy of a hero was his fatal, tragic flaw. Specifically in terms of Macbeth, that flaw was twofold. Macbeth was flawed by the ambitions which he just barely held in check. He also was flawed by his manipulability by his Lady [b. c. 1015] and by the three witches. The real tragedy of Macbeth's flaws was their fatal nature. They foredoomed his own tragedy. Specifically, they ate away at everything decent within him except for his courageous nobility in battle.
