Resolution, color representation, and how long the colors remain before fading.
ResolutionMost non-pro photo printers (inkjets) have a resolution of about 4800 DPI (dot per inch) rating. Don't let the numbers bother you though. Just print a high quality large photo file on good paper with the printer's quality set to best and see the result.Dye sublimation printers feature a much less 300 DPI rating, yet provide high quality photos.
Color representationSome pro printers have 11 colors (one cartridge for each color) the cheapest ones mainly have two cartridges a black one and a tricolor one.
Paper used for the print should be of great concern here. Actually, the paper will provide the white for your prints and most of the time your printer will "mix some white" to represent the colors.
Other qualities of the paper that will affect the print quality are its texture and ability to absorb the ink.
Print LifeSome Brands promote their products to yield prints that hold their colors for a century!
It is the nature of things to fade, but it is still nice to have these prints last a bit.
Again paper type is of concern here as well as exposure to light and contaminants that may reside in the air.
