NO. they are not. They are called pandas because they look between a panda and a cat. But the panda did come after the red panda.
also red pandas are their OWN species pandas fall into the category of racoons which scientists just discovered. giant pandas are normal.

No they are not. Giant pandas are bears and belong to the family Ursidae, which is the family all bears belong to. Red pandas are more closely related to raccoons and ferrets although this relationship is a distant one. Red pandas belong to the family Ailuridae, which consists only of the red panda and its extinct relatives. Giant and Red Pandas are similar in name and somewhat similar in distribution and diet but that is where the similarities end.
