Someone who is thinking of suicide should talk to a good friend, go out with some friends, etc...Do whatever will help them take their mind off of suicide! If you have any feelings of hurting yourself, or others, especially if you have a plan of how to do it, get professional help immediately. Call 911 if you are in the US and people will come and help you.

People who are unhappy with their lives and want to end it. Sometimes it is the people who you know are depressed and everybody knows it because they are good at showing it or want to let people know. A lot of the time though, the people that commit suicide are the ones that keep it to themselves until it is too late, or they are trying to reach out and get help but don't know how to get it or no one will help them.

Likely there are multiple reasons ranging from mental health issues to personal disgrace to terminal illness, and many more. Speaking from experience (as someone who has had major depressions all my adult life until very recently.

Being afflicted with medical depression is such an unpleasant state of mind to live with that it can be attractive idea to just make it all go away by any means possible. Which includes suicide. I believe the depression itself has some role in producing thoughts of suicide and compounded with constantly being in a state of emotional misery that doesn't go away (as the normal emotional reaction to some tragic life event eventually does).


Just to make matters worse, one tends to feel lethargic all the time, lack the motivation to do anything - including interact with other people, and lack the ability to enjoy doing anything whatsoever. And this condition lasts anywhere from a few weeks to months without getting better. All day long, every day, for weeks of living through this state of mind and sooner or later suicide may seem like a good option. There probably is some biochemical deficiency contributing to the entire condition and as I've experienced it tends to produce thoughts of suicide. When not in a depression I almost never think those thoughts, thus my hunch the biochemistry plays a part.


Now, given that you think about suicide regularly and add to it daily life is just an absolutely miserable thing to endure; suicide becomes more and more the best choice. The only thing preventing me was the fact I was an only child and it would hurt my parents if I did; had that family situation been different I doubt I would be writing this today.

That depends on a tremendous number of factors. Most importantly, since you categorized the question as Depression and Bipolar, let's stick to them.

Bipolar patients of all kinds are 10 to 20 times more likely to commit suicide in any given year than the general population. This means .4% of all Bipolar patients commit suicide per year.

However that general number is not very telling; there are other factors to consider. Drug and alcohol use increases the risk. As does gender; as in the general population, men are half as likely to attempt suicide as women, but twice as likely to succeed in the attempt. Thus, being a man increases the risk. Access to weapons increases the risk. Going off medication increases the risk, as does high stress. A family history of suicide greatly increases the risk.

more than likely all they ever wanted in life never came to be. Or all the every wanted in life did come to be and they still felt empty inside. Suicide is a permanate solution to a temporary problem.

Fear = False Evidence Appearing Real. So fear is also a common cause of suicide. Life feels hopeless with no answers that work that are real to you. And nothing seems to take away the pain whatever it may becaused from, losing a loved one, a girlfriend/boyfriend not being able to be strong enough or brave enough to get them back in your life like it used to be. Feeling everything that happens it nothing more than another heartache or taumatic event. So why even try. Might as well end it all. No one cares. This is often the reason for suicide. Yet often times more people cared than the person even was aware of.
