Not long. Cottage cheese is low in fat, (like yoghurt), and high in water, so it's keeping qualities are similar as to yoghurt. A solid cheese (like cheddar) is primarily made of fat and very little water, so it is really well preserved and will keep for a week or two beyond it's use by date. Cottage cheese will not.
If it hasn't been opened, it may be fine for a few days after the expiry date. If you've opened it already, it's less likely. Smell it, and see how much it has separated.

Maalox is no longer any good after the expiration date. When the expiration date has passed it means that it is no longer as effective as it once was.
The expiration date is there for a reason. If it's a cheesecake which doesn't use preservatives, then the expiration date is probably pretty accurate.

Due to the high level of preservatives, Velveeta becomes unpalatable long before it becomes unsafe to eat. Also there must be an expiration date on the package .
