After moving to Hebron, the older men of Judah anointed David as king over their tribe in 1077 B.C.E., when he was 30 years old. Saul's son Ish-bosheth was made king of the other tribes. About two years later, however, Ish-bosheth was assassinated, his assailants bringing his head to David hoping to receive a reward, but they too were put to death like the pretended killer of Saul. (2 Sam. 2:1-4, 8-10; 4:5-12) This paved the way for the tribes who had till then supported Saul's son to join Judah, and in time, a force numbering 340,822 rallied and made David king of all Israel. (2 Sam. 5:1-3; 1Chronicles 11:1-3; 12:23-40)

According to traditional chronology, King David's reign began in 876 BCE; for the first seven years only over Judah, and for the following 33 years over all twelve Israelite tribes of Judah and Israel. Non-traditional opinions place his reign about 150 years earlier.See also the Related Links.

We know with some certainty that the Assyrian conquest of Israel was accomplished in 722 BCE, with a potential error of no more than one year. On the assumption that the biblical chronologies are reasonably accurate from that time backwards to the reign of King David, we can date the beginning of his reign to approximately 1004-1010 BCE.

In practice, scholars doubt the accuracy of some details in the early monarchy, as well as saying that David was more like a local warlord based around Jerusalem, than the king of a great and expansive empire stretching north into Syria. Any estimate of the dates during which he led his people are therefore only very approximate.

Conventionally speaking, King David is believed to have ruled over Israel from circa 1010-970 BC, when his son King Solomon (circa 970-930 BC) assumed the reign.
