Captive maned wolves live between 12-15 years. Their lifespan in the wild is unknown.
The Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) closely resembles the Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes), but the two are of an entirely different genus (note the name), and the Maned Wolf is much larger than the Red Fox. In addition to this, the Maned Wolf also has a black mane (hence the name), which can be erected when the Wolf feels threatened - to enlarge it's profile, or when showing aggression.
The maned wolf is considered near threatened, and is listed by the Brazilian government as vulnerable. The reasons are hunting, loss of natural habitat and automobile traffic. It was widely and erroneously believed that the maned wolf was a chicken thief, and the animal was also hunted because its eyes were considered good luck charms.
